The Questions I Get Asked Most Often:
Why is this an elected position?
By having an independent elected County Surveyor, they work for you the people and not another elected official (i.e. the County Mayor). This is an elected position by law (Utah Code 17-23-1) and provides checks and balances to allow for the best service to the public. If your County Surveyor isn’t meeting their statutory functions, the public gets a say in who fills that seat. If your Surveyor was appointed or hired they would be beholden to someone other than the people they serve.
What is land surveying and why is it important?
Land surveying allows you to understand your land boundaries. A survey is performed in order to locate, describe, monument, and map the boundaries and corners of a parcel of land. It might also include the topography of the parcel, and the location of buildings and other improvements made to the parcel. This is a profession that dates back to the beginning of civilization. The history of Land Surveying is one of the things that attracted me to the profession. Over time the tools and techniques have evolved, but the basic principles still apply today. This is a profession that allows you to use modern day technology, work outdoors and in an office setting, and continually learn as you grow in the profession.
What does the County Surveyor do?
The County Surveyor is statutorily responsible for the maintenance and re-establishment of all the Public Land Survey System (PLSS) Monuments throughout the County. In Salt Lake County there are nearly 23,000 of them and our office finds more every day. The Surveyor is the official mapper for the County, providing many of necessary maps for the residents of Salt Lake County and the other elected officials. They are the keeper of all private land survey records that are performed in Salt Lake County (on average we receive over 900 record of surveys a year) The Surveyor advises the County Executives (Mayor and County Council) on all Land Boundary questions and issues. They also perform all the necessary survey work for the County.
Why should I vote for Bradley Park for County Surveyor?
The reason Bradley is the most qualified candidate in this race is his unique experience as Chief Deputy Surveyor. Since 2021 He has worked side by side with the current County Surveyor to administer all aspects of the Surveyor’s office. His experience prior to coming to Salt Lake County also prepared him for this role. He has extensive leadership and project management experience in my previous role at Dominion Energy. This current position is a high level executive role, helping to manage the Surveyor’s Office budget, as well as managing the entire staff (27 merit employees and 3 time limited employees). He is involved in the hiring process for all the departments within the surveyors office. His goal from day one entering the surveyors office has been to make the office the best it can be. He is always looking at processes and making changes as needed to find more efficiencies in the way the officer works. He has the right kind of experience and support to be successful as the County Surveyor. The Surveyors office is the foundation for the County Tax system. There are 5 different office that make up that system (Surveyor, Recorder, Assessor, Auditor and Treasurer). The support of many these elected officials in Salt Lake County shows the confidence they have in Bradley to be your next County Surveyor.
